The Perfect Storm for Virtual Simulators

Updated: Apr 5, 2024

Virtual simulation solutions are rapidly transforming the landscape of military and law enforcement training and this presentation will explore three key factors, in this “perfect storm”, driving the adoption of these systems.

1) Technology

Since the early twenty tens, we've witnessed a multitude of advancements that have been critical for the development of virtual simulation.

  • The evolution of Hardware. Bulky VR headsets gave way to stand alone HMDs, positional trackers directly in the headsets, eye tracking, hand tracking, weapons and tools that replicate the fit, form, and function are creating immersive experience.

  • Game engine updates like Unreal Engine 5 & Artificial intelligence create realistic training scenarios and NPC interactions. Learning management systems, objective AAR’s, A.I. adaptive learning models for personalized training.

  • As well as the Advancements in computing power and wireless networks which enable greater dynamic simulators and interaction between participants. Now we have cloud computing and the need for a high-end gaming PC to process strenuous programs is the thing of the past.

2) New Generation The new generation who are currently serving and entering the military and law enforcement field have grown up with technology. Millennials and Gen Z’ers are very comfortable with adapting to rapidly changing technological environments, as seen with frequent upgrades to gaming consoles, new PC builds, the latest cell phones all with new UI’s, software builds, hardware loadouts, and this is happening every year or two. With VR standalone systems, we went from 3 degrees of freedom to 6 degrees of freedom in a matter of one year. This adaptability translates perfectly to the rapid advancements of simulation training systems.

 3) Educational adoption

The COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated the adoption of virtual training solutions. Educational institutions embraced a hybrid approach, integrating virtual learning into their curriculum. This gave upper management awareness of the supplementation and augmentation benefits as well as imprinted virtual education programs onto generation Alpha.

In summary of the perfect storm around virtual simulation adoption:

#1 The rapid technological advancements #2 The tech savvy generations, millennials, gen z’ers, and the new gen alpha

#3 Global adoption of virtual learning software to augment or suppliment
